We’ve been painting…

We have painted our. entire. family. room.

This was a major project, requiring around 36 total hours of work. No, really. To paint one room. The family room is very large- around 18′ x 18′- and has three walls of wood paneling and one wall of heavily textured plaster. Ripping down the paneling and drywalling was just not an option for us right now, and putting drywall over the paneling was almost equally daunting. So, after many (MANY MANY MANY) days of research on how to best paint paneling without it melting/ peeling/ scraping off in giant swaths, we trekked to Home Depot (and maybe also Lowes? It’s a blur.) and gathered our supplies. Two gallons of primer, three gallons of paint, a quart of trim color, and 5 days later, it looks like a whole different room. Scratch that- a whole different house. Now we just need window treatments!

Here’s the process:

Spackle the (over 200) holes in the wall from nails and screws, sand everything lightly, then cut in with primer. We used a high-adhesion Behr latex primer, which worked great.
YIKES! Cut-in and spackled.

Then we primed the whole room with a 3/4″ nap roller- to get in all of those little cracks. We were painting the trim and ceiling beams as well, so we primed right over them. Here’s the room, all white and looking a dozen times brighter already:
All primed!

Then we tested our colors on the walls; this was after maybe a month of having almost a dozen swatches taped to the wall and waffling back and forth: “Too purple. Too beige. Maybe too blue? Too blue… I think. Perfect!”
Mmmm... color samples!

And then, 14 discs of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on CD later, we rinsed our brushes, folded our drop cloths, and snapped a couple empty-room pictures:
Piano against the NEW GRAY WALLS!

Our NEW GRAY WALLS!

Hooray! The plaster wall is a few shades darker, and is Valspar’s Drizzling Mist. The three paneled walls are Valspar’s Silver Leaf. All of the trim is Ralph Lauren’s Design Studio White. All three colors we used were color-matched by our new best friends at Home Depot in Behr paint.

Check back soon for photos of our beautiful gray room that also include furniture!

    Hi,

I found your site through a google search for people using Ralph Lauren colors matched in Behr paint. As you might know, the Home Depot has discontinued their RL line and my local store got rid of their swatches, but I’m still trying to track down the Behr formula for matching it to Design Studio White (for a painting project). Do you happen to have the formula (from the top of the can)? If so, would you email or post it for all of us that love Behr paint, but prefer the rich colors of Ralph Lauren’s palette?

    Thanks,

    Alex Hernandez
